The One Minute Version:

I have a degree in Nutrition from the University of Minnesota.
I’m married. (To a red-head!)
We moved from Minneapolis to Los Angeles over two years ago.
I’m currently the Communications Manager at an anti-hunger nonprofit.
I love everything about food. (Cooking, eating, reading, watching, learning.)
I try to workout as much as I can. (See above.)

Life Timeline:


After 18 years in Wisconsin, I left for college at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and loved it so much I lived there long after college. Then, Richie and I got married and moved to Los Angeles two weeks later. Why Los Angeles? We wanted to get out of the Midwest and try sunny Souther California. I have a lot of family here too, which has made the transition so much easier.

Why I Blog:

In early 2009 I started toying around with the idea of starting a blog. I wanted to share recipes, nutrition and health tips and new exciting foods that I try with my friends and family. Now I’m an obsessed blogger. Looking back at old posts is hilarious as they are awful! I hope you can laugh at them too.

What I Do:

So what do I do? I’m not a practicing Nutritionist. I started my career in the natural food industry – Marketing and am currently the Communications Manager for an anti-hunger nonprofit called MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger.

My Favorites:

I’m obsessed with eating out. It is one of my favorite things to do. Since I don’t travel as much as I’d like to, I love living in a city like LA, where I can “explore” different cultures through their cuisine. I also love long and lazy weekends (I’m kind of a homebody), coffee (starbucks blonde roast, intellegentsia el gallo breakfast and dunkin donuts hazelnut), dreaming about owning a house and decorating it. Wine (usually Cabernet) is my drink of choice and I think that reading a good book that you can’t put down is one of life’s greatest gifts. I’m also obsessed with design and playing around in photoshop, illustrator and indesign. And babies, always squishy babies. Working out isn’t so bad either.

My (Non) Favorites:

Being away from our friends and family in the Midwest is rough. My hair (it’s thin and fine) and the fact that I always want things (clothes! purses! makeup!). LA traffic (duh).

    I just found your blog and I ADORE IT! I love your food philosophy. I, too, strive to focus on real, whole, unprocessed foods: fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, whole grains, and lean proteins. You have to find balance within yourself, and it looks like you have!

    Wow! So fun to find a blogger from Minneapolis. I grew up in the Twin Cities, went to college in Indiana and then made my way to California. I hear (from my parents) that this has been a very cold and extremely snowy winter. Hang in there!

    I noticed that you are not a Registered Dietitian. You should be cautious in providing health and nutrition advice without licensure (or even more importantly…. professional liability insurance for healthcare professionals). Why have you not completed an internship program if you are so interested in counseling the public?

    Hi Caroline,
    As you probably read above, I do have a Bachelors of Science degree in Nutrition from the University of Minnesota. When the time came to apply to internships I was/and am still interested in the wellness side much more than the clinical side. I would like to complete an internship in the next few years however because I believe it is a great credential to have!

    Very good to meet a fellow nutritionist in MN. I live in California but am trying to move out to northern Minnesota to start up a natural health store that specializes in unrefined expeller pressed oil. Rent and business are so much cheaper out here than in southern CA. Just wanted to say howdy and best of luck in your nutritional ventures!

    Hi! Found your blog yesterday through Gojee and am a big fan. I’ve been following a few cooking blogs for five years or so, and have taught myself to cook. I’ve found I too enjoy cooking with whole foods, eating mostly vegetarian and healthy eats but leaving room for cheese, wine, chocolate, etc. I’ve been getting interested in nutrition a lot lately as well, so your posts about those sorts of things are appealing too. Keep up the good work! :)

    Hi Emily! I just found your blog… I feel like we have a lot in common! I love your food philosophy, and I must say we are a lot alike in the ‘education’ department! I don’t really love the ‘clinical’ side of nutrition, and as an RN I worked as a nurse for a year in a hospital and knew it was not for me! I am much more interested in the prevention of disease, etc. with real food! :) I look forward to reading more! :)

    I just wanted to reach out and tell you how incredibly great I think your blog is. Real women should eat real food! After giving up a low carb/ fake sugar/no-fat/restricted everything, food is no longer my enemy! Oh, and I am leaner, stronger, happier and healthier than I have ever been (and a side benefit is that I am not crabby and starving all the time)! We need to teach our daughters, friends, sisters and mothers that food is not the enemy! Wishing you all the best! I look forward to trying out several dishes – starting with the Thai Coconut Soup!
