daily eats: 10.12.11

I can’t believe it is already mid October! It was a hot, hot day in LA today. Abnormally hot although we still saw people with sweatshirts, coats, etc. I wonder if we will ever wear a sweatshirt when it is 90 degrees out…

Apartment searching is our main focus at this point, but after two straight days, we took the morning off.

The day started out with a walk – we walked around the neighborhood for about 40 minutes, including a stop for coffee.

Then it was time to work for a few hours – I munched on a bag of cashews, almonds and dried cranberries.

I wanted something light as I planned on going to yoga in a few short hours. Planned being the keyword, we left too late and didn’t make it in time. Tomorrow, it is. Since we were already in Santa Monica, we decided to explore a bit and take a walk on the beach. First though, we came across a Whole Foods Market.

One of the only things that could make me feel better about missing yoga (I needed yoga, even the Taster agreed) is a tour of a new Whole Foods and an early lunch. The salad bar was pretty phenomenal and I loaded my box with all lettuces (romaine, spring mix, spinach and kale) then topped with cabbage crunch, lemon tofu, broccoli rabb, roasted cauliflower and hummus. Perfect and the salad bar was $2 off per pound today so it was actually pretty reasonable!

Then we hit the beach for a quick walk, which was just what we needed. I must admit that the apartment hunting has been a little more stressful than I thought it would be. It seems like each place we go is missing one of the aspects we are looking for. :(

Then it was back to the apartment search and we looked at about 5 different places. Nothing great, but we have narrowed it down to two definite neighborhoods, which will hopefully make the process move a little quicker now.

A few hours after lunch, I was of course hungry, so I munched on an apple,

and then some triscuits.

After we returned to my cousins, it was time for pizza, salad and wine. (x2 on the food) Really good pizza – NYC style!

More work and I’m off to bed!

Cross your fingers that we find an apartment today!!

Good luck with the apartment search! The picture of the beach just gave me the urge to pick up and move, it’s so cold and rainy here in DC.

I will keep my fingers crossed. I hate hunting for a place to live, it is such a long process. I am sure that “the place” will be found though. I am SO jealous that you are in Cali. My husband was there on business this week and said the weather was amazing. I am cold. I hate being cold :( Ha ha!

I’ll cross my fingers that you guys find something great soon! At least you have great weather for your hunt! Oh, and I will publicly shame you if you get all soft from SoCal weather and start wearing sweatshirts when it’s warm out. ;)

Good luck with finding the perfect place. (Although by the looks of your surroundings, you already have ;-) We too, are in the high 90’s, but I love it. I don’t miss the cold weather at.all. Enjoy this time, although stressful, it’s fun to have all your CA “firsts.”

Hi Emily! Welcome to Santa Monica, my ‘hood. If you have questions about the area (apartment or food-wise, or anything else for that matter), feel free to send them my way. Also, not sure where you’re going to be going to yoga (tons of good places around here), but I have to do a plug for the studio I go to – YogaWorks. I go to the one on Montana, which is close to my place. Been reading your blog for the past couple of months, and I’m a fan – love the practical down-to-earth advice, but how you deliver it in a personal, engaging way. :)

Thank you Sarah! I’ve been looking into YogaWorks actually because they have a studio close to where I’m staying right now, I’ll definitely check it out.

I love Whole Foods as well! Your dish looks so delicious and healthy. The cauliflower and spinach make the meal look very flavorful. You’ve found great dishes!

Peet’s Coffee!! Lucky girl! Can I please take a sip through the screen?

This post is making me miss California so much! I’m just now catching up on your life, and had no idea you were moving to the west coast! I lived in LA and San Francisco when I was growing up, and call both home. I think you’re going to love it. :-)

I hope apartment-hunting went well yesterday!

Hope the apartment hunting is going well! I live in Phoenix and it’s hot here still too! I always see people dressed for fall/winter despite the heat, and don’t know how they do it. As much as I’m craving scarves and boots, I just don’t think I can sweat through it :)

I am SO jealous when I see Whole Foods trips…I really wish we had one!

    That pizza looks devine!!

I do NOT envy the hot weather you have…It’ve beautifully cool here! I wore yoga capri pants and crocs (don’t judge) out this morning and I was WAY under dressed! Winter is coming!!

Everything looks so great out there! It looks like it suits you well. I really hope your apartment search comes to an end soon. It has to be tough when you are searching in such a large area. Love the photos!

You’re in one of my favorite places on earth. I spent quite a bit of my childhood in that area of CA. I know it sounds crazy, but boat life is actually pretty wonderful. We lived on a sailboat in Marina del Rey just a few blocks from Venice Beach and a short drive from Santa Monica. Just writing about it makes me want to go back!

If you’re in the mood for total Italian comfort food, try Alejos in Westchester on Lincoln. Hungry for tamales? Head over to Tamara’s Tamale in Culver City. It’s not a restaurant, but you can buy a stock to keep in your freezer or eat one on the spot. H.O.T. (House of Teriyaki) was always favorite for breakfast, although I can’t tell if it’s still in business. It’s just off of the beaten path near Venice Beach and the canals. It’s filled with locals. It’s not healthy, but it’s a really little slice of LA. There’s an amazing fresh juice shop called One Life right over on Santa Monica’s Main Street too. I love a good mid-day dose of carrot/apple/ginger. I could go on and on…

We lived in King Harbor over my Redondo/Hermosa/Manhattan Beach for a time too. So much good food… so little time!
