in my cupboard: seeds of change rice & beans

Some inventions are just plain smart.

Like fully seasoned rice and beans, that take just 90 seconds in the microwave. That are organic. And tasty.

Sure, I love homemade brown rice, but I don’t always have the 40 minutes it takes to make it. Part of my slowing down efforts are not spending so much time making lunches (it was getting a bit ridiculous) so I’m turning to quick meals like these to get me through the week.

This long grain brown rice is ready in minutes, and when paired with some chicken sausage and veggies I’ve got an easy meal that is perfect to take to work. The flavor is great, but this truly is all about convenience.

What are your thoughts on microwavable products like these? Love? Hate? Do you use them?

Hi Emily! what you say is interesting but I still think that homemade brown rice is so much better! I don’t think you take 40 min to make it… if you have a rice cooker ($25? or more) you just take less than 30 seconds putting in the ingredients and then you just have to wait doing something in the meantime… like taking your shower, cooking the veggies, meat.. etc… I mean, you dont have to be there in front of your rice for 40 min… It’s still better the homemade one!

      Hi Katiana,
I definitely agree that homemade is better! The nice part about this rice is that it is fully seasoned and requires no clean-up whatsoever. Most of the time I do make my own rice (it is a lot cheaper!) but I love this in a pinch!

I haven’t used to many microwave products/meals in the past, but I like something healthy, and fast for when we get home late and their is no time for cooking.

I live on quick meals and nothing is quicker than the microwave. Well, that’s a lie because ordering out is pretty darn quick too :)

One thing I do get a little concerned about is when the food is heated up in the plastic bag it comes in. I don’t know what the bag is made of and what kinds of chemicals are getting into the food. Not sure if this rice is cooked in the bag or not. I’ve seen a lot of foods that are and it makes me a little nervous.

That is a really good point Tracey! I did think of that, and it is concerning to me too. Since I don’t use these on a daily basis, I’m not panicking, but definitely something to think about!

I’ve worked on some aseptic microwave products like that one in my professional life, so I am a bit sensitive to some of the flavors from the packaging and processing. Therefore, I tend to go with frozen meals for quick meals. And yes, homemade is best, but not always feasible. Life gets in the way sometimes. So does sleep. :)

I think meals like that are great when you are about to eat your arm off and need food fast! You’re right, sometimes you just don’t have the time to wait for the water to boil and the rice to finish cooking! I’m a fan of Trader Joe’s frozen brown rice. It’s already cooked so you just have to heat it up.

Haha! My parents are hard-core Asians, and they still rely on good ol’ microwaved white rice from time to time…and love it!

You’ve got the stamp of approval from a rice-eating Asian. ;-)
