Although I’ve got many memories from college hanging at the 7 corners area of Minneapolis, given its close proximity, I rarely make it over to that part of town. When I heard about Republic, I knew I would be heading there soon – I’m a sucker for “fancy” bar food and a great beer list. (Don’t mind the fact that I rarely drink beer.) When we finally made it over there, we ran into Angharad from Eating for England. Fun!

It was a muggy, hot night when we visited, so unfortunately the patio wasn’t really an option (thanks Minnesota for going from 50 degrees to 95 in one week) and the inside was familiar as many of the same elements were left behind in the transition from Sgt Prestons to Republic. The food definitely got a make-over as did the beer list, but the reasonable prices stayed behind. The fish bowl drinks that Sgt Prestons was famous for are no longer on the menu. ;)

We were there for happy hour so I stuck with the house wine ($3) and the Taster happily had his favorite local tap beers. We decided to order almost all of the happy hour food specials over the course of a few hours and started with guacamole and chips. It was just that, nothing special, but a good way to start out a hot Friday afternoon.

Our other “appetizer” was ricotta fritters with honey. We were quite truthfully, a little disappointed. These weren’t hot (not sure if that was on purpose?) and just didn’t have much flavor to them.

But that was when the meal turned around and we went from “meh” to “more!”

The fish tacos were delicious. Warm corn tortillas, seasoned fish, crisp cabbage and a bit of pico de gallo with fresh lime juice hit the spot.

The burger – you actually get to choose what kind you want from the normal menu – was a hard choice but we went with the red wine reduction and brie, which was served on a shiny brioche bun, complete with fresh greens on the side. For $5. Seriously.

We will definitely be back to Republic, if not for the burgers, there’s always beer. And that patio.

Those prices are AMAZING! It’s a shame the ricotta fritters were just meh, but the idea sounds awesome! Were they just underseasoned?

      I know! I love happy hour! :)
I’m not sure they were seasoned at all…maybe it was just a mistake.

I already wanted to check out Republic, but more so after your review! I don’t live over by campus, so unless I’m over there for class I hardly ever head that direction when I’m thinking “where to go to eat?” Will definitely make a point to get there!

I’m so jealous that you have happy hour in MN! The laws in IL don’t allow for drink specials that have an end time (they argue that it encourages binge drinking…which is totally true). That burger looks awesome- red wine reduction and brie?? I might have to try to recreate that at home. :)

What?! No happy hours? Has it always been that way or have I just never noticed? Happy hours are the best and I’m sad you don’t have them. :) Denver has the most/best hh’s I’ve ever seen so go there and get your fix. ;)

Wow – eating in NYC for those prices would get you a hot dog on the street! That place looks so yummy – I want all of that food right now.

oh! our favorite bar tenders from salut are working at republic too. i must check out this place asap. on a side note, we heavily leaning toward a wedding venue solely because the same bar tender can work there as well. is that sad?!

I don’t think I ever visited Sgt. Prestons, but didn’t realize it was gone — I guess I don’t get over to Seven Corners much, either!
