SELF Magazine {postworkout treat}

A few weeks ago, the October issue of SELF Magazine came out. And my name is in it.(!!!!!!!!!) The October weekender section (page 44) is all about fit motivation and I created a treat – perfect for postworkout snacking!

It is a great little healthy treat to have around. Here is the exact recipe if you’re interested in specifics, enjoy!

1/4 cup almond butter
1 Tbsp honey
1 Tbsp chia seeds
3/4 cup brown rice crispy cereal
1 Tbsp mini chocolate chips
Microwave almond butter and honey for 10 seconds. Stir in chia seeds. When cool, add cereal and chocolate chips. Shape into little balls and refrigerate for at least an hour.

It has been a long time (2 months!) since my last lately i’ve been… post. So we have a lot to catch up on. I’ve been…

buying spin shoes. It only took me oh, 7 months of consistent spinning to finally do it and they make such a wonderful difference. They are also ugly.

tasting California Cabernet at Silverlake Wine. I love their low-key wine tastings (every Monday and Thursday) and considering that Cabernet is my favorite varietal, and I’m a resident of California – I kind of had to go.

following wine tastings with an amazing dinner of cheap Mexican food and finally trying papusas. In my dream life, every Monday and Thursday I would go to Silverlake Wine for tastings and then to Maya’s for cheap Mexican food.

extra busy at work. It is a good kind of busy and exciting!

having so much fun with newish site! It is a way to share what you know and learn what you don’t! I’ve been busy building boards related to health/nutrition/food and I’ve been loving learning about more about politics, education (and how the internet shapes classrooms) and the latest in technology.

celebrating Richie’s Birthday (today!) with beer-braised short ribs + bacon & smoked gouda mashed potatoes last weekend and tonight with dinner out!

Hello Friends and Happy Spring!


Coffee: Still on the 1/2 & 1/2 kick…

Breakfast 1: 1 packet instant oats + 1 Tbsp almond butter. I ate about half of it as I was leaving to work out shortly after and needed something, but didn’t want too much.  Pretty ugly and very boring!

Workout: Today I checked out up dog fitness, a yoga and cycling studio in my neighborhood. I’ve been wanting to try it out for a long time and I saw a groupon last week so I grabbed it! I took a great 45 min spin class. It was part motivational speech/part gospel church/ part gay dance club all rolled up into a spinning workout. It was fabulous.

Breakfast 2: egg + kale chips (sample from Expo West) Kind of random, but kind of like greens and eggs!

Lunch: 1 can tuna (with touch of mayo, onion, celery and shredded cheese) broiled on 1 slice sprouted bread + salad (romaine, arugula, olive oil, red wine vinegar, raw parmesan cheese, salt & pepper) + raw sauerkraut

Snack 1: small apple x 2

Snack 2: I had to take a few pictures (so embarrassing) so we had a photo shoot and wine on the roof!

Dinner: I didn’t have anything planned for dinner so we decided to finally check out the sushi restaurant around the corner. We’ve been a little nervous because it always looks empty, but I think we’ve been looking too early. I’m still not really used to the later dinner life of LA. (I’m used to my 5:00 happy hours, which really don’t occur here).  I’ve also been a little nervous that we would like it and then want to go all of the time.  It was about 8pm by the time we went and the restaurant was pretty busy and continued to get even busier as we were there. I had another glass of wine (rebel) and we shared 5 rolls that were all delicious. I kind of want to go back tomorrow for lunch…

daily eats: 2.21.12 {paleta}

Todays post is all about PaletaPaleta* provides home delivery of gourmet nutritionally balanced meals and I’m trying them out for the week!

It was an early wake-up call so I started the day with coffee. :)

Workout: I tried a new Jillian Michaels dvd (Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism) – I haven’t purchased any workout dvds in a long time, but since I’ve been working out more at home lately, I needed to change it up. I loved this dvd! It does not require weights, which is great if you are going to take it with you on a trip and is a combination of cardio, kickboxing, plyometrics in a circuit form. It was intense, got me sweating and left me tired. Perfect!

Breakfast: My first paleta meal of Honey Yogurt, Fresh Grapes, Veggie Sausage Patties, Chili Lime Almonds and Fresh Berries. So good, and surprisingly filling.

Snack: I was working over the normal lunch hour so I also had part of the snack on my way to work. I tried the Energy Bite (left corner) and I was really skeptical – I typically don’t care for those types of bars, they usually are filled with dates, too sweet for my taste, etc. but these were great – there was definitely peanut butter in it but I’m not sure what else!

Lunch: Thai Chicken Salad with Spicy Peanut Sauce (and the clementines above) – I was a little worried that the salad would be soggy, but it was great and much more filling than I expected! The dressing was delicious and the salad contained chicken, carrots, peppers, onions, fennel and celery – all over spinach.

Snack 2: On my way home I grabbed a snack from the store I was working at and when I got home I made some miso soup while dinner was heating up. I must say, it was wonderful to just throw dinner into the oven and not worry about anything else!

Dinner:  Lemony Cannelini Bean Dip with Cucumber and Carrot Sticks (they were designated as a snack) along with Snapper with Lemon Mustard Sauce, Roasted Zucchini, Brown Rice with Lentils and Slivered Almonds. Dinner was delicious!

Dessert: Chocolate x2!

I’ll be sharing my full review on Paleta with you next week, but I’m SO excited for the rest of the meals to come. I was so impressed with everything today!
