1. black garlic / Have you tried fermented garlic yet? It’s delicious! I’ve put it on pizza (SO good) and also blended it with butter. It’s got great, intense flavor, without being too harsh. Black Garlic North America sent me a bag to try out and I’m definitely hooked.

2. trader joe’s cold-pressed green juice / This juice has the perfect amount sweetness (but not too much) and contains a whopping 17 kale leaves, 1 lb spinach, 1 large apple, 1/4 english cucumber, 1 celery stick, 1 lemon and 2 inches of ginger. At $4.99/bottle it’s a bit more reasonable than the $8-10 bottles.

3. sabra supremely spicy hummus / Normally I turn my nose up to store-bought hummus, but this spicy version from Sabra has made it into my grocery cart a few times now. I love it with rice crackers or tortilla chips.

4. rawfoodz ranch revival dressing / This dressing TOTALLY surprised me. I’ve tried Tessa Mae’s “ranch” dressing and thought it was good, but definitely had no resemblance to ranch. Somehow, this raw version does. It’s a blend of olive oil, apple cider vinegar, hemp seeds, sesame seeds and a whole lot more. (All good ingredients.)

5. nature’s path qi’a superfood cereal / I stood in front of the pallet of this cereal (at Costco) for a good 10 minutes, trying to decide if I should buy it or not. It’s so healthy! But it’s $15! But chia, buckwheat, hemp seeds….so healthy! But $15 for “cereal?” I walked away. I turned around and grabbed a bag. And then convinced the other woman contemplating the same purchase that she should buy it too. It’s good! The dried cranberries are a necessary sweet bite!

6. rishi iced tea / A few weeks ago I decided that I needed to start drinking iced tea this summer, so I picked up peach and tropical crimson iced tea at whole foods. I’ve been making a big batch every week since. (And I just ordered a tea kettle after burning my hand trying to make tea with a pitcher and a coffee mug.)

7. tres pupusas / These were another whole foods buy, and they were tasty! I would request a bit more cheese…shocker but they were delicious and have great nutrition stats (150 cal, 4 grams of fiber and 8 grams of protein per pupusa) with minimal ingredients.

daily eats: 8.6.14

It cannot be August. Can it?! Part of me is utterly terrified that we still haven’t even gone to the beach this summer and part of me is really excited because it means that my mom comes out in a few weeks! I can’t wait!

workout: I woke up late (always a great way to start the day, huh?) and so instead of going for a walk, I did 20 minutes of Fitnet cardio workouts. Better than nothing! I also went for two 15-minute walks throughout the day so I managed to hit my nike fuel goal for the day!

beverage: coffee + 1/2 & 1/2, standard!

breakfast: 1 cup strawberries + 1 cup power o’s + 1 Tbsp chia seeds + 1 cup 2% milk. I was really excited to find the power o’s cereal the other day. They are made with beans and brown rice and have 6 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber per serving. (The plain version of the cereal definitely needs some sort of added sweetness – the fresh strawberries were a perfect addition for me but I’m not sure I could eat it on its own.)

snack: I don’t normally snack in the morning, but if I’ve had cereal, it’s kind of guaranteed. I found this Vega bar in my drawer and it was SO good. It reminded me a bit of kind bars and macaroons. YUM.

yoga: Yoga Wednesday at work! Love it.

lunch: romaine + kale + cucumber + pepper + olive salad + dressing with a turkey burger + slice of cheese + 1/2 of an avocado

I absolutely could not pass these up. I kept trying to, but they are one of my favorite candies and they were staring me in the face. They were SO good. :)

dinner: we’re currently housesitting (yes, again!) and my cousin happens to get blue apron, so we lucked out and got their week of meals! It was a treat because we love blue apron but it’s too expensive to get it on a weekly basis. Hanger Steaks & Roasted Potatoes with Sautéed Long Beans & Tomato was on the menu last night. It was, as always, delicious!

Daily Eats | A Nutritionist Eats

other random bites: a few almonds before dinner, a few bites of corn from Richie at dinner and a few bites of gelato after dinner. :)

approximate nutrition stats: 2,048 calories, 105 grams fat (44%), 187 grams carbohydrates (35%), 31 grams fiber, 74 grams sugar, 107 grams protein (20%)

thoughts: I definitely had a sweet tooth today! I also felt kind of snacky, but that is pretty normal when I have cereal for breakfast.

oat revolution steel cut maple & brown sugar oatmeal. I have a confession to make. I’m going through a major obsession with maple & brown sugar instant oatmeal. Would I recommend it as a Nutritionist? NO! But it’s kind of addicting and so easy…

greek

sweet earth ‘the greek burrito.’ It’s a blend of white beans, baby spinach, feta and oregano with 13 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber. It was delicious! (I found it at Target, but have seen it in natural food stores too.)

CLover_CreamOnTop_Plain-e1349343478569

clover ‘cream on top’ whole milk yogurt. I bought this on a whim and I must say that it’s been a while since I’ve boughten non-Greek yogurt. I loved it. The protein isn’t as high (obviously) but it was so lovely…I’ll definitely buy it again.

g & b cold brew coffee. G & B was recently featured in The New York Times as the “best iced latte in America.” It’s made with their homemade almond and macadamia milk. It was delicious, but I love their cold brew coffee even more. I never thought I would say this, but…it doesn’t even need cream.

earthbound farm chia & soba noodles & asian greens powermeal bowl. These bowls are a little small for the price, but they would make a great meal (that’s certainly cheaper than a restaurant) when paired with some grilled chicken or tofu. An easy, delicious and organic meal!

better booch kombucha. I’m still on a fermented foods/kombucha kick (I should really make my own) but I found this LA-made version in Peach Tea flavor (called Morning Glory) and it’s fantastic.

massel concentrated liquid stock. I love having stock in the pantry, but I have a tiny kitchen and just don’t have the room for boxes upon boxes of stock. I’ve started cooking my quinoa with a mix of water and stock and it is SO much better than all water. Massel recently sent me some of their concentrated stock and I love that it is made with simple ingredients and is vegan and gluten-free.

hampton creek just mayo. I bought this because I thought it was real, homemade mayo. Turns out it is vegan mayo. I contemplated taking it back to Whole Foods because I’m not usually a huge fan of vegan mayo, but figured I’d give it a try. It was DELICIOUS. And sorry honey, I never told you it was vegan. I’m pretty much counting down the days until I can buy their chipotle version, I love the packaging, the flavor, the texture, blah, blah, blah! I’m obsessed!

wildbrine sauerkraut. I tried this a few years ago at Expo, and am so glad it’s in stores now. The Dill Pickle is by far my favorite and it is such a delicious way to get in some fermented foods in on a daily basis. (Side note: Has anyone made their own raw sauerkraut? I’m tempted!)

Favorite New Products | A Nutritionist Eats

everlane frozen wheat grass shots. These come frozen (like an ice cube) and can easily be tossed into a juice or smoothie. I love that I can add a bit of concentrated wheat grass without the hassle of dealing with wheat grass. I don’t really care for the flavor of straight wheat grass, but these are really mild and per the website, this is because it is grown outside instead of indoors like most wheat grass.

shell-n-all fried peanuts. I found a bag of these at World Market and after trying shell-on peanuts in Napa, I’ve been trying to find something similar. They are crunchy and delicious – and the nutrition stats are similar to regular roasted peanuts. Score! (7 Facts You Want to Know about Peanuts)

Favorite New Products | A Nutritionist Eats

vega one vanilla. I’ve been loving Vega’s “all-in-one nutritional shake” which is full of protein, fiber, greens, enzymes, probiotics and a slew of vitamins and minerals. (Both the chai and vanilla are fantastic!) I keep things simple and love vanilla vega one + frozen strawberries + spinach + coconut/almond milk.

chipotle garlic sauce. We found this line of spicy sauces, rubs and snacks at a local LA event, and man the Chipotle Garlic Sauce is so good. I loooooove it on chicken drumsticks. (Even more so than buffalo sauce which was my favorite!) They also have some fun popcorns but beware, even my spice-loving brother couldn’t handle the ghost pepper candied popcorn!
