You guys know that I’m at Trader Joe’s A LOT.
So much so that the employees at our local store know my children, especially the one who is always at the sample counter. 🙂
I’m there frequently, because I love so many of their items, but also because it’s two blocks away. When it comes to grocery stores, workouts, and coffee shops, convenience is key!
And now that food and recipe development is my JOB, I find myself running to the store SO much. I’ll forget a garnish that I need to shoot with. I’ll forget an ingredient that I need to test a recipe with. And since it’s a short two blocks away, it’s also the perfect excuse to head outside for a quick walk.
So all this is to say that I’ve tried almost everything that store has to offer! Some items are great (but not healthy!), others are ok (but nothing special!). The items below are our favorites, that we almost always have at home. If you have some favorites that I’ve missed, I’d love to know what they are!
9 Healthy Items from Trader Joe’s
Trader Joe’s Sprouted Multi-grain Bread ($3.49, found in bakery section). We always have sprouted bread in our house – because it’s perfect for toast, which we eat much every day. Sprouted bread is high in protein and fiber, 100% whole grain, and I think it’s even more filling than your standard whole wheat bread!
Trader Joe’s Greek Whole Milk Yogurt – Plain ($1.99, found in refrigerated yogurt and milk section) Plain full-fat greek yogurt can be hard to track down, but trader joe’s has it and it’s thick, cream, and really affordable. Top with fruit and granola for an easy breakfast parfait packed with protein; serve alongside some oats; or with a drizzle of honey for a sweet treat.
Trader Joe’s Mixed Nut Butter ($5.99, found in nut butter section, sometimes near bread) This nut butter is packed with: Dry Roasted & Salted Almonds, Cashews, Walnuts, Brazil Nuts, Hazelnuts & Pecans and is a tasty way to incorporate a variety of nuts into your diet. Different nuts = different vitamins and minerals, so it’s always a good idea to mix things up.
Trader Joe’s Raw Shelled Hempseed ($5.99, found near supplements or breakfast items) Hemp seeds (or hemp hearts) are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids (you can learn about their importance here) AND protein! Put them in smoothies, or sprinkle them on just about anything: yogurt, cereal, banana with nut butter, muffins, oatmeal…seriously, anything.
Trader Joe’s Almond Butter Granola ($3.49, found in cereal section) Granola has a bad reputation for being calorie-dense and high in sugar and this version isn’t light on calories, but it does have a higher amount of protein and fiber than most versions. It also doesn’t taste overly sweet. Pair it with some plain greek yogurt and sliced banana.
Trader Joe’s Organic Riced Cauliflower ($1.99, found in freezer with vegetables) This frozen riced cauliflower is great to always have in the freezer because the possibilities are endless! There’s nothing more than cauliflower and salt, so it works in almost anything. Toss a little in smoothies (you can’t taste it!), stir fry into a cauliflower fried rice, or blend into a cauliflower-based soup. Is there anything cauliflower CAN’T do? No.
Trader Joe’s Cod Provençale with Ratatouille & Rice ($3.99, found in the freezer) I know. Microwave fish is a little scary, but this meal just works. I always keep one in the freezer for the times that we don’t have a meal for Demi as it’s a complete meal and ready in 5 minutes. The ingredient list is super clean, and the nutrition stats perfect for a light meal.
Trader Joe’s Black Bean & Cheese Taquitos ($3.69, found in freezer) These little taquitos are just a corn tortilla with black beans, mushrooms, cheese, and jalapenos. It’s a fun meal for kids (and adults! ;)) that’s surprisingly healthy! Each serving of four taquitos has 7 grams of fiber and 12 grams of protein.
Trader Joe’s Simply Almonds, Cashews & Chocolate Trek Mix ($5.99, found in nut section) This sweet and crunchy blend is perfectly satisfying and just the right amount of chocolate to tame a sweet tooth. These were a lifesaver when I had gestational diabetes because they were the perfect combo of carbs and protein, yet felt like a treat or dessert. Oh, and pre-portioned snacks just make life easy.
